Syllabus for Gongbi Portrait Drawing

1.Teaching objectives of the course

Cultivate students’ form awareness and ability, enhance students’ ability to observe and refine objects, so that students can master the basic expression methods of Chinese figure drawing and improve their overall understanding of Chinese line drawing. Promoting the excellency of Chinese art. Training qualified professional painting talents and professional art education talents.

2.Course nature and tasks

Line drawing is the basic course to train students on the concepts and techniques of Chinese painting. Using lines to represent forms is the main characteristic of Chinese figure painting. Its aim is not to faithfully represent light and shadow, the colours of nature nor the sense of space and perceptive, but to represent the unity of subjective consciousness and objective reality.

This course aims to cultivate students’ form awareness and ability, enhance students’ ability to observe and refine objects. Teaching students how to use line drawing, a unique Chinese painting language, to create a picture.

3.Application Requirements

Gongbi Portrait Drawing is a required course for Chinese painting;  students should complete fundamental courses such as sketching and colour theory before this course.
