Schools need to assess the English proficiency of the students for their enrollment. Secondary schools assess students with their entrance examinations or with students’ report cards. IELTS International English proficiency test is used as the assessment of students’ English proficiency looking to enrol in preparatory and universities.
IELTS is the English test that is taken by most people in the world. It will comprehensively assess students’ English proficiency in reading, writing, listening and conversation.
**Each IELTS test is valid for two years only.
Do you need to take the IELTS test? *
IELTS is suitable for students aged 16 or above. If a student must take the IELTS test, our counsellor will remind the student during the application process. Students and parents can also use the following table to determine whether they need to take the IELTS test (according to the institutions and courses they are applying for):
Enrolling in a British boarding school: IELTS not required
Enrolling in government colleges and preparatory colleges: IELTS required
Enrollment in UK university courses: It depends on the institution and course you are applying for. Many British universities will accept students’ HKDSE English results to replace IELTS qualifications. Students who obtain Level 4 in the English subjects of the HKDSE will have the opportunity to be exempted from taking the IELTS test.
Enrolling in International Year One or University Preparatory Class: In most cases, you must take the exam
* Whether it is necessary to take the IELTS test depends on the school’s admission policy and the UK student visa regulations. Please consult our counsellor or school for confirmation.
